The Six Tastes

One of the first steps to changing our health is through changing our diet and, beyond that, changing our relationship with food.

To say that we are what we eat could not be more in line with eating Ayurvedically. Foods are the building blocks of life and understanding food beyond the diet trends and fads is something we should all strive for.

Just like we are all unique in body, mind, and spirit we also hold a completely unique ‘metabolic’ fingerprint one that through care and understanding, we can nurture to the fullest. The 6 tastes are really at the core of starting to understand the qualities of our food and the affect that they have on our body and mind. Just as we are made up of a various ratio of the 5 elements so is our food. Each taste is a unique combination of the elements, and each food also has a hot or cold quality which can impact our digestive capacity.

Below are a few examples of whole foods (foods that are no broken down and processed) that contain each taste. Getting to know these tastes is such a powerful way to start intuitive eating and can open the door to providing your body with exactly what it needs. Try to incorporate all 6 tastes in every meal and notice the effect this has on your overall digestion and well-being!
